Every timber urn is unique, and that natural beauty is part of what makes each piece so special. It also means that not every graphic, photo, or design will engrave in exactly the same way on every type of wood.
Laser engraving results are influenced by three main factors: the timber itself, the way the artwork is prepared, and the engraving settings used. Of these, timber is the most naturally variable, because no two pieces are ever exactly alike.
· Differences between heartwood and sapwood
· Variations between juvenile and mature wood
· Growth conditions and natural density changes
· The wood’s position within the tree
These natural differences can occur even within the same timber species, which is why one design may engrave beautifully on one piece and need adjustment on another.
Design detail, image contrast, file quality, and engraving settings also play an important role. Fine lines, soft tonal changes, and photo-style images often need careful preparation to achieve a clean and attractive result on timber.
While there are no absolute rules about what will or will not work, some timbers are naturally better suited to certain styles of engraving. In general, smooth, consistent timbers tend to reproduce fine detail more clearly, while more open or varied grain patterns are often better suited to bolder, simpler artwork.
Lighter, more even-grained hardwoods can often produce sharper detail and stronger contrast for intricate graphics or photo engravings.
Timbers such as Basswood, Maple, and Birch are often excellent choices for highly detailed work because their fine, even grain helps create crisp, clear engraving.
By contrast, timbers with more prominent or uneven grain, such as Tasmanian Oak, can make very fine detail less predictable. These timbers are often better suited to bold graphics, simple linework, or less complex imagery.
That said, beautiful, detailed engravings can still be achieved on more challenging timbers with the right adjustments. Careful testing, artwork refinement, and selecting the best engraving approach can make a significant difference.
For this reason, we cannot guarantee in advance that every graphic will suit every timber urn exactly as first envisioned. What we can promise is that we will always work with you to find the best possible outcome. We trial graphics on the selected timber before production, and if a design is not translating well, we can usually adjust the artwork, recommend a more suitable timber, or suggest an alternative engraving approach. Our goal is never to discourage your ideas, but to help bring them to life in the most beautiful way possible.
