Myrtle timber has a naturally beautiful and unique appearance. It can have rich, vibrant colours, including golden glows, reds, and oranges, as well as striking "fiddleback" or "wavy" grain patterns that are often sought after for high-quality woodworking. Myrtle’s warm tones and striking grain patterns provide a sophisticated, timeless look.

Half lap joins on the corners offer robust structural integrity while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic. The streamlined, rounded corner top enhances both the tactile feel and visual softness of the urn.

All the timbers at Heartwood Memorials have been sourced from sustainably managed forests, making this urn an eco-conscious choice.

The urn’s finish highlights the natural beauty and character of Myrtle, displaying striking fiddleback and wavy patterns which can be polished to a high-gloss, professional finish.

Myrtle is a hard, dense wood that is known for its durability, making it a strong and long-lasting material for an urn that needs to last for generations.

Myrtle timber symbolises a variety of things including love and beauty, craftsmanship and durability. Historically, the myrtle tree has been associated with goddesses of love like Aphrodite and Venus, and its wood is prized for creating beautiful, high-quality, and long-lasting handcrafted items, making it a meaningful choice for a final resting place.

Why choose Myrtle timber?

Myrtle timber combines visual beauty, practical benefits, and positive symbolism, making it an outstanding choice for ashes urn boxes that are both elegant and deeply meaningful. Each urn is a one-of-a-kind piece, crafted to honour memory and celebrate life.

Important information about our urn sizes

A table with different urn sizes

Our urns are handcrafted from natural timber, which means each piece is unique. Due to the availability and natural variations in timber, the external dimensions of our urns may change slightly from one piece to another. However, you can be assured that the internal measurements will always be as listed or slightly larger—never smaller. This ensures you have enough space for the ashes, regardless of minor changes in the timber.

For your peace of mind, our adult urn has been specifically designed to fit the standard plastic ashes container used by crematoriums throughout Australia. This makes the process straightforward and ensures compatibility with industry standards.

Choosing the Right Urn Size

Guidelines for families

Selecting the right urn size can feel overwhelming, but it’s important to know that there’s no exact formula—just helpful guidelines based on average needs. The size of the urn you choose depends mainly on the amount of ashes (cremains) you need to store, which is generally related to the person’s body size/weight before cremation.

Why it's not an exact science

Cremation results can vary due to factors like bone structure, age, and the cremation process itself. Importantly, body fat does not affect the amount of ashes produced-fat simply burns away during cremation, so the final volume of ashes is determined mostly by bone mass. These guidelines are based on averages so it’s always safer to choose a slightly larger urn.

If in doubt, always consult with the funeral director or crematorium for guidance on the specific amount of ashes.

Custom sizes are also available to ensure a perfect fit for your needs.

General Guidelines

Adult (Large): For most adults, a large urn with an internal capacity of about 5.8 litres is suitable. This typically accommodates the ashes of a person weighing over 100 kg (220 lbs). Adult urns are sized to fit the industry standard plastic container used by Australian Crematoriums.

Child (Small): For children, a small urn with an internal capacity of around 1.8 litres is usually appropriate, fitting the ashes of a child up to about 45kg (99 lbs)

Pet (Medium): For pets or smaller individuals, a medium urn with a capacity of about 2.6 litres is recommended, suitable for up to 70 kg (154 lbs).
